A long awaited official PlayStation application has finally been introduced. This week, Sony unveiled the Playstation application for the iPhone and iPod, as well as the Android based devices.

Named the “Official PlayStation App,” this application will allow its users to access the PlayStation network remotely. As of its creation, the application will allow users to check the status of their friends, view the trophies they have earned, and see news related to Sony’s gaming industry.

Social features will also be included that can link up with Facebook and Twitter, and even share updates through e-mail.

Nothing about actual gaming was mentioned in the announcement, according to CNet.

The application will be available completely free, and will run on the iOS 4, as well as Android 1.6 or higher. Support for Android 2.3, “Gingerbread,” is likely to be included.

A release date on the app has not been issued. The United States launch of the application has not been made aware, but the company did say that the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands will receive the application.

Users of the PlayStation 3 and Sony PSP will be able to benefit from the new application. The PlayStation 3’s rise in popularity has attributed to the creation of the official Sony Playstation App.

Whether or not a version for the Windows Phone 7 or the Symbian OS will be created is unknown. The Windows Phone 7 version would have to compete with the Xbox 360 on this operating system, as Microsoft has an app for users of Xbox Live on their proprietary mobile operating system.
