PlayStation 3 fanboys have always used the Xbox’s disc format as a subject of criticism, toting the PlayStation’s Blu-Ray player as a major advantage. Microsoft may be on the way to fix this drawback, as they have recently released some information surrounding a testing phase that will begin to explore a new disc format for the Xbox 360.

In a blog post, Larry Hryb, the Director of Programming for Xbox Live, announced the preparation for the preview program, which will allow players to participate in the testing phase. This is an open call for United States gamers, which is open to anyone in the U.S.A.

“I am happy to announce that we’re doing an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program for our next release, and the opportunity to sign up is now available.”

Players are welcome to visit the blog post and begin the sign up process. In order to sign up, players will have to sign up through their Xbox Live Gamer Tag and complete a brief registration survey. Once all is said and done, players will be told whether or not they can participate.

The first reward being offered for participation in the program includes a new copy of Halo: Reach. According to the blog post, other prizes could also be distributed through the program.

Larry Hryb, also known by his Gamer Tag Major Nelson, stated that multiple thousands of participants will be inducted into the program, so players have fairly significant chances or participating in the event. Those with an Xbox LIVE Gold account will be given priority in the selection process.

Hryb also stated that he will update his blog as the beta test fills up. The disc format is unknown, but it is likely to be Blu-Ray since this type of disc won the format war.
