Google is said to launch a Google Music service that will soon rival Apple’s iTunes.

According to a Cnet report, Google is already testing the music service internally with a process called dog-fooding in which employees try out a new product or service.  It usually means that a company is preparing for an imminent outside launch. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Google Music will allow users to store their music libraries on Google’s servers and then stream songs on any internet-connected device.

Last week, a user called ‘WhiteWindows’ on an XDA Developers forum, claimed to have accidentally stumbled upon the service when he installed the Honeycomb OS on his HTC EVO 4G. He was able to access the previously locked ‘sync music’ button which provides streaming services. Music industry insiders confirmed that the user did access the feature but that the final version would differ greatly from what he saw, reports Digitaltrends.

There were also rumors about the music service during the Mobile World Congress that took place in Barcelona last month during which Motorola Chief Sanjay Jha said that the Xoom tablet’s advantage in having the Honeycomb OS was that it would have a music component. “If you look at Google Mobile services [via Android] today, there’s a video service, there’s a music service – that is, there will be a music service,” he said according to PCmag.

Google was also said to be in talks with major record label companies last year with executives told them that Google Music would be ready by the end of 2010 says Cnet. Google is not just looking for rights to songs but wants cloud music rights, and this is why negotiations are delayed, because there is no actual music to stream yet, reports TGDaily.

Google hasn’t confirmed or denied the music streaming service, saying only that the company does not “comment on rumor or speculation.”
