The success of Google’s Android operating system has continued to prove successful, and a recent study issued by the digital research firm comScore has shown that it is by no small margin. They have shown that Android now controls 33 percent of the smartphone market share.

The company has taken a three month average of total U.S. smartphone subscribers above the age of 13, and they have found that Google’s Android has climbed 7 percent over the last three month average in November, 2010. Android has topped the charts, with Research in Motion’s BlackBerry devices slipping behind, having fallen to 28.9 percent. The BlackBerry market share slipped 4.6 percent over the average.

Apple has maintained a consistent grip on the market, with 25.2 percent of the market share under their belt. Apple’s iOS was the only other OS, other than Android, to climb, albeit slightly. Apple’s mobile devices gained 0.2 percent of the market share over the course of the three month average.

Microsoft and Palm are still in the running for remaining on the chart. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform controls 7.7 percent of the market share, down from 9 percent during the last average. Palm’s devices, which likely includes the PalmOS and the WebOS, have dropped to only 2.8 percent of the market share – a 1.1 percent decline since November.

Android carries the advantage of being spread across multiple carriers and a wide number of different devices. Android’s current leader is the HTC ThunderBolt, operating on the Verizon 4G LTE network. The iPhone 5 is on the horizon to compete, as is the HP-Palm Palm Pre 3. Windows 7 Phone is also expected to grip part of the market share, but Android success is tautological to future gains – the popularity of the Android brings more developers, which fuels the operating system’s growth. Another example would be Windows against Mac in terms of software availability.
